In 1959, Prof. Guy OURISSON created the GECO (Groupe d’Etudes de Chimie Organique) inspired by the famous« Gordon Research Conferences » which he attended in the 50s.
Involving 80 to 100 academic or industrial researchers and twelve lecturers from the most prestigious universities in the world, this annual congress has quickly become a key event for the community of organic chemists. Its well-suited format favors ideas exchange with great enthusiasm but also include a large number of social events and outdoor activities. This contributes to the excellent interactive nature of the meeting atmosphere and encourages future collaborations between participants.
The GECO addresses the last discoveries in organic chemistry, either fundamental or applied to the major societal challenges (health, nutrition, energy and environment). Natural product synthesis, catalysis, the search for new mode of interaction at the molecular and supramolecular levels, as well as the application of organic chemistry in life and material sciences are non-exhaustive examples of subjects covered by the GECO conferences.
The first GECO was held in 1960 in Sarlat (Dordogne), and 55 others meeting have been then organized across France. After Nant (Aveyron) in 2015, the 57th GECO will take place in the “Basque country” at the “Domaine de Saint Ignace” in Ascain in 2016.
Welcome to Euskadi to share a fruitful and friendly week centered on organic chemistry!
